The Arthasastra

In Lecture II.4.5, The Four Aims of Indian Life, Campbell mentions a translation of the Arthasastra made by Shamasastry as being available but "very clumsy." Does anyone know a translation they would recommend as being better? Thanks!

This is one of my favorite quotes with a similar sense: MOYERS: How do we transform our consciousness? CAMPBELL: That's a matter of what you are disposed to think about. And that's what meditation is for. All of life is a meditation, most of it unintentional. (bolding mine) A lot of people spend mos...

There's a great discussion on the Flood story in Bill Moyers' Genesis: A Living Conversation. For me at least, Campbell's influence can be felt in Moyers' questions and comments. Many religions and views are represented in the discussion group, but the majority of the interpretation focuses on the p...

Help - my husband is in jail because he has schizophrenia ..

And I'm almost at the edge myself. I've already stated in these fora that I think Camopbell was almost 100% wrong regarding schizophrenia, so I won't make that argument again. But what can I do when he is lost in his own world and making decisions that are so irrational but effect us both? I keep th...

Vissi, thank you, somehow I did not know this poem :? I made my song a coat Covered with embroideries Out of old mythologies From heel to throat; But the fools caught it, Wore it in the world’s eyes As though they’d wrought it. Song, let them take it, For there’s more enterprise In walking naked. “A...

I don't know the answer to this question - though I have a few ideas - but I just wanted to say that I think it is a terrific question and goes right to the heart of Campbell's work. An amazingly insightful question from a "first poster" :D

There's two that I try to live by :-) People say that what we’re all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think that’s what we are really seeking. I think that what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our life experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonance within o...

Only that my only experience of this condition was that once under the influence of LSD sound became visible to me. What about reading ourselves into these texts? One way to interpret them is to look at the entire range in which they are interpreted, which means our interpretation is as much as part of the myth as the author's. Maybe the most useful way to read them is to ask "What does this say to me?" Sometimes...

Just for a slightly different perspective ... I was born in 1966 without inheriting my mother's immune system. There is a very good chance that I would have died had I not been diagnosed immediately with this disorder. My older brother was born with a disability that I doubt a midwife could have han...

Abelard's interpretation was that by subjecting hinself to such horrific suffering Jesus evoked a sense of compassion in the human heart, which is the birth of the human from the human animal. It is in compassion with our fellow sufferers that we awaken to our spiritual potential. Of course, what we...

Steve C., first I have to agree with Evinnra, it's great to see a post from you again. I think you are exactly right, the movement of the heart towards Jesus on the cross is exactly what we should (?) be fostering as the true meaning of Easter. Campbell said that Abelard's interpretation of the cruc...
