bonfire

My wife and I have for some years, out of an atavistic, unknown urge, celebrated Solstice with a bonfire, on our home property which had 35 species of trees on it when we bought it nearly 30 yrs ago. solstice

We have had for a dozen or so years, bonfires to mark solstice here. Like to provide a ceremonial stick for anyone who wants to offer something to be purged or purified in the flame that keeps the sun for us while it turns the corner towards a new year. http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid...

Have not visited this thread in a while. I just want to point out that when I hear the meme people discuss natural selection, I think the key word I heard them use, (forgive my lack of a quote), to describe selection, way down on the cellular level, is "stable". What gets replicated is what is stabl...

I don't see the meme theory as an attempt to reduce our humanity. After all, whatever we think of as our "selves" is just a story we tell ourselves to help understand the mystery.

Thanks for the reply, Ron.

I don't see anyone saying we are "just" replicators for memes. My thinking says we might also be replicators for memes. My little world is big enough to contain a lot of entities of different kinds.

Why not might ideas be another kind of entity?

"...Replication seems plain enough, although selection is a bit more complex...."

But not more complex than the function of memory. The "unsuccessful" is not remembered? On the other hand, I seem to have noticed a myth "a meme" about the idea of lost knowledge.

A meme is anything at all that can be learned, and, here is the important part, repeated, ergo, replicated. Down here in the south US, all the good ole boys wear baseball caps with goatees. You can profile them all the way from diet to leisure activities to voting preferences based on that (IMHO) si...

Those who lecture and write about memetics appear to suggest that ideas have status as entities though they don't have physical form (except by their physical expression, as in knots). If quantum physics taught us that matter and energy are interchangeable, who is to say that ideas are not a form of...

Cindy B, I appreciate your patient, repeated turning of my gaze back to Jung's ideas re collective unconscious and archetypes, as I still struggle with my grasp of those ideas. Of long concern to me has been the phenomenon of "mass mentality" that drives large-scale activity on the mass level, like...

I have been slogging through Dawkins' book, mainly because I have never been able to really grasp Darwin's idea, even tho rationally I do think it is the way living things have developed. The great sweeps of time involve are just too much for my grasp. Here is what I understand him to say. (His use ...

I have not ventured past Campbell's descriptions of the tales in Creative Mythology, with descriptions of Percival and the red knight, as well as the piebald knight, not to mention Tristan etc.

I have not, but it is next on my list to donate and get the audio versions of JC's Arthurian tales.
