Campbell defines god as the personification of the transcendent mystery of existence, which is beyond all categories of thought. It is not a "state." That's a category of thought. You can't even say it's an idea because that, too, is a category of thought. Perhaps this will help... 1. A Cup of Tea N...

The Bodhisattva is a state of being, Ron, not an individual. There is a certain paradox here exemplified by the Zen koan, which is intended to break one from the habit of linear thinking.

Remember the Buddha's answer it to hold up a flower.

Came across this the other day.... "Now it has become to such an extent a sheerly mechanistic world, as interpreted through our physical sciences... and behavioristic psychology, that we're nothing but a predictable pattern of wires responding to stimuli. This nineteenth-century interpretation has s...

"However, the basic belief in world Buddhism of karma and reincarnation based on that karmic status, implies that something is "keeping score". ~Dionysius Dionysius, I would counter that the Buddhist would consider any implication irrelevant. There are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. W...

I find the term "Buddhist Atheist" a bit of a conundrum. Isn't Buddhism, in its purest sense, neutral on the question of "god." Isn't god irrelevant?

I don't have the reference right at hand, but I am quite sure he addresses this interpretation of the Crucifixion in Occidental Mythology. Christ is analogous to "the fruit of the tree" in Eden, and atones for the original sin which shut the gates of heaven.

I agree that Twain takes more issue with religion than religious texts. But I'd have to dust off my Twains to to make sure.

Loved his autobiography, btw.

Will try, Ron! Truth is, I'm now the Rights and Permissions guy for the JCF, doing legal agreements and such. That and my responsibilities as an English teacher who gives his students far too many writing assignments in the hope of molding them into competent writers, a super power these days, leave...

CoaHO Functional Once More

Greetings Associates! While poking about, our WebWizard Mark unexpectedly fixed what had been plaguing the forums. Eventually, with the launch of our new website, we'll be moving over to a new platform. In the meantime, enjoy some good discourse! I will be checking in now and again, but time constra...

Hi Rom, The forum software is badly corrupted at this point due to its rather profound obsolescence. We're in the process of crowd funding to launch a new website. Should start appearing on the JCF Home Page soon. Stay tuned! In the meantime carrying on a meaningful conversation here isn't very easy...
