I had coffee with a friend yesterday who is very well read in history and keeps up on current geopolitical issues much better than I do, or want to for that matter. Anyway, his view is that China will implode, not explode. In other words, China chose an economic path in which they took no responsibi...

There's lots of reasons to practice meditation. To find peace, happiness, relief from stress and pain, to be a better father, husband, worker, lower blood pressure, improve overall physical and emotional health... But to do so for the purpose of becoming 'transcendent' sounds to me like an exercise...

Butting in with everybody's permission just to share what I think; 'Yes' this can be an ample definition or chiefly a social frame for religion. -Nermin I do not think that you can "butt in" on a public discussion! That's why we're here, unless I missed something along the way! :) I agree that the ...

I think I can get with the idea of volition not being involved, but to say that consciousness does not have a role seems to rule out awareness that it happened, unless we are willing to say that we can be aware and not conscious of having been aware, which seems to mean that we never had a transcend...

Does the pursuit of, and achievement of, transcendence, answer all these questions? Why am I here? What is it that I am supposed to do? What is the good? -Steve This might be better suited in the Transcendence specific thread, but as i indicated there I do not think the topic of transcendence under...

For me, my experience is but a reflection of reality. Our feeling minds have had eons to evolve. Our minds that reason I would argue not enough. -Rom This may be true, or it could be the opposite. If I think in evolutionary terms, emotion would come after reason. Why? Because we do not necessarily ...

Steve said: Not surprisingly, we disagree Nandu. Yet, I learn so much from you. One of the most transcendent statements I have heard on these forums. Interesting insight and nicely put. Would go well in the " Discourse Thread. " -James I believe it was Will Rogers who once said something like, "I d...

IMO, transcendence has absolutely nothing to do with consciousness.

Consciousness is the enemy of transcendence. -nandu
Interesting.

By implication, raising or expanding our consciousness would then interfere with experiencing transcendence.

Of course most of the discussion here has centered around conscious experience, but we also experience unconsciously.

We have many unconscious processes driving the machine that is the human body.

Do these unconscious processes have anything to do with transcendence?

Am I the only one, then, who sees the absurdity in trying to put into words what cannot be put into words... -Cindy Certainly not. This was the crux of my discussion with Clemsy in the "Is this a religion?" thread. It may be a paradox, or it may just be mistaken thinking. The idea that we have a wo...

Would you then say, Clemsy, that you desire for there to be this distinction? Not at all! -Clemsy If we discovered that our brains evolved to make us see a part of our universe as being beyond our understanding, or semantic ability to properly describe, would that have an effect on how you viewed t...
