These factors are part of a therapeutic intervention I was learning about last week.

I appreciate everybody's input here. I am not choosing to 'discuss" this as I was purely interested in feedback. So far, it appears that the consensus is "no" these constructs would not constitute what could be considered a religion.

Thanks! :)

Is This a Religion?

Ok...this is an attempt to get a simple answer to a rather complex question, but I am really just looking for some kind of consensus of the folks who haunt these halls to the following question... Strictly speaking , could you look at the following list of items and call it a religion? Integration o...

1. it is outside of science. 2. it is a paradigm shift (From: an eye for an eye. To: turn the other cheek. Prior to that, there was collective punishment. An eye for an eye was more proportional, and an increase in the level of mercy). -Steve I'll mull this over, but I do have a couple of quick rea...

Religion? -Steve
Can you be more specific? I can think of many, many counterarguments, but I would rather hear your rationale. :)

Well, nandu, behind every pessimist is a disappointed optimist, or idealist...take your pick...although I do understand the difference.

As I think about the history of humanity, I struggle to find examples of paradigm shifts that occurred peacefully outside of science.

My thoughts on Columbus Day align with Mr. Zinn... The Indians, Columbus reported, "are so naive and so free with their possessions that no one who has not witnessed them would believe it. When you ask for something they have, they never say no. To the contrary, they offer to share with anyone...." ...

The whole edifice is built on buying/selling/making a profit. Can we break this cycle? -nandu I can only see things changing how they typically do...as a result of a catastrophic awakening, which is always followed by a bloody "it's your fault" war or two. We seek to demonize externals...like "Star...

Thanks James, I did not think it was too likely that you were taking a pro-war stance, but I wanted the clarification. Nations are going to act in their own interests and consensus is the illusion of agreement among parties looking to share the spoils of war. As I see it, when these things are going...

James,

Are you advocating that a military force go into Syria?

You used the words "failure to intervene" and I wonder exactly what you mean by that.

Thanks!

There does appear to be a general "the ends justify the means" attitude in the world of economics.
We consider the use (and misuse) of "resources" (including labeling people as such) to be a kind of given.

I guess the guy was not totally out to lunch...From the wiki link: Malthus, writing in the 1780s, can be faulted not for being "wrong," but for not anticipating the discovery of a finite supply of carbon-based energy that would stave off for two centuries the dynamic he outlined. Without this subsid...

Can we redefine profit as getting the maximum out of natural resources in a sustainable way, and doing the least damage? -nandu I was more wondering aloud, than responding, but I will go a bit further since you pushed a bit harder. The simple answer is yes. That's the thing about definitions, they ...
