While looking through my older files, I found this introduction to the following story. I included a shortened version of "The Horn" for contrast: I have never documented this experience. Indeed, about twenty years passed before I even mentioned it to another. Interesting, that. Even in the moment I...

Kvete, welcome to the JCF's Conversations of a Higher Order! First off, I have to say, that, as the storyteller, your reaction here: Then I read your story of the horn in the night and of existential blackness which was almost more than I could endure. is extraordinary. My blink response was, "Oh my...

Rom, that link Cindy offered, Myth and Psyche: The Evolution of Consciousness , is excellent . I use it with my seniors as an intro to Jung's ideas, which we then use as a lens to analyze literature. It's not that long. Anyway, according to Jung, archetypes are as hardwired into the human psyche as ...

Rom, you might say archetypes are story elements that emerge out of the human psyche. Story patterns are archetypal: the hero's journey, coming of age, the apocalypse, birth of the hero, etc.

Well, James, your question made me think of this story, which I did share here many years ago. In fact, I recently tracked down my saved file. This is a rather intense memory of mine. I have another to balance it for later on. Here it is: I was only 4 or 5 at the time. I didn’t have the language to ...

It's always important to remember that human beings are designed toward stories. It's the pattern we see in the warp and woof of events, and allows us to not only make sense of the world, but to pass that sense on to others and down through the ages. Through these patterns the archetypes emerge, and...

Don't think she hung out that long, Cindy. I got curious so I looked in the dusty stacks! Don't think she posted anything after late 03, early 04.

As for Clemsy and Cindy (our moderator), I appreciate them as well. Clemsy reached out to me years ago and helped me so much with dilemma at the time, as well as Tree Hugger - I don't know if she's still here or not. Goodness, Nadie! That goes back 11-12 years! Tree Hugger left us sometime in 02-03...

And, Nadie, I would like to add that when composing your own memoir, your own hero's journey, the bottom line is to tell your story. I don't know about "unreconstituted" and "self-designed" selves. We are who we are in the moment we exist, and in the end if one is tell the story of one's life, then ...

Nadie, I hope I can find you a reference. I'm sure someone in the JCF would be aware of what might be out there. I will forward your query and get back to you as soon as may be. I wish you all the best in this pursuit. As an English teacher I often encourage my students to write the stories they wou...

By your definition 90% of the people have some growing up to do including the politicians and tyrants. Most never do. This is true. One must ask why. I have an article being published in the winter edition of the Jung journal and I address this question from the point of view as an educator. Educat...

What Cindy said. ^^^ My dream is that one day intellectuals will stop saying that values are relative and personal, and get down to business defining the code for all people. Ron? That thought horrifies me. The hero's locus of control, once atonement with the father is reached, is internal. Any exte...

I learned everything I need to know about honor from my grandfather through my mother, Ron. He was a poor Puerto Rican gentleman who carried himself like a diplomat. You do what's right. Always. Carry your head high and stay true to yourself. You are impeccable. Honor isn't a military concept. It's ...

I have no problem with honor, Ron! It is a bit harder to pin down, though. Ask Falstaff for instance. lol!

But I don't quite agree that it's the archetypal hero's primary quality.
