I have a problem with this because I don't know they discovered anything at all. I group of "guys" say they have made a discovery because of some data and implications I can't understand.

Interesting, Nermin. Still science usually has practical applications, say, like, electricity! I was just wondering if there was any with this new discovery.

Let me share then a photo showing inside the detector at Super Kamiokande
that truly gives a sense of awe to most people;
Super Kamiokande, inside the detector

Super Kamiokande is a neutrino observatory in Japan where they announced
the first evidence of neutrino oscilliation in late nineties.

So that¹ we can confidently say that there's stardust in our making and
for some, this makes a difference.

¹ Namely, thanks to all those experiments worldwide about neutrinos and other
particles

That's a good question, Andreas, and you're probably voicing the sentiments
of millions. I believe that essentially it is a rare victory long awaited for
mathematicians. Because, Higgs had suggested such a field back in 1964 as
a result of calculations that he made based on limited data showing the mass
of certain particles at several different stages of a process.
And again, physics not being limited with theoretical calculations,
proof was needed and LHC -using the latest technology available- gave us the
chance to detect a Higgs-like boson.
That seems to be the real astonishing part of the story <IMHO>

WoW! You have to appreciate the surrealism in that image, amazing!

Ercan, thanks for the history lesson!

Have you guys watched Gattaca(1997)? A very nice story about the spirit of human potential and the human drive to explore and go beyond!

The scientist is just following his bliss... he is usually not bothered about practicalities.

It is left for us engineers to find an application for their discoveries.

I haven't seen any proof and/or an explanation how the "proof" exists. All I know is that there was a general consensus by "the experts" that they discovered a Higgs boson and it is the greatest thing in history.

Right now it still doesn't compare to the light bulb.

Science isn't yet claiming definitive success, Neoplato: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/05/scien ... wanted=all

"...[Heuer] and others said that it was too soon to know for sure, however, whether the new particle is the one predicted by the Standard Model, the theory that has ruled physics for the last half-century. The particle is predicted to imbue elementary particles with mass. It may be an impostor as yet unknown to physics, perhaps the first of many particles yet to be discovered..."

"...For now, some physicists are simply calling it a 'Higgslike' particle..."

The particle is predicted to imbue elementary particles with mass.
I wonder how someone can prove a concept like that. :?

Scientists do not claim "success" until they have tested, retested and confirmed beyond any possible doubt. To claim "epoch-making discoveries" without the least shred of testing or evidence belongs to the realm of pseudoscience.

Many concepts which are mathematically provable may be very difficult to conceptualise: the fourth dimension is an excellent example.

Just because it is difficult for a lay mind to grasp, Neo, does not mean it's unprovable.

Yes the forth dimension is a difficult one however for whatever reason this one (higgs), at least to me, makes sense.

So what are your predictions Nandu? Do you have any as to what kind of practical applications this discovery will have?

For now and in the near future, anyway, how about knowledge for knowledge's sake? :?
