Murders in the Rue Morgue
Hello all,
I've chosen the famous tale by Edgar Poe as title to this new thread for sharing
nightmarish stories from the news and from all over the world just to find the courage to
consider homicide as Campbell or Jung would probably examine in order to
better understand the most horrific aspects of human nature.
So sadly, my first sub-topic comes from Istanbul and a link to
CNN International's video is as follows;
http://cnn.com/video/?/video/world/2013 ... d-dead.cnn
-as Ivan Watson reports, courtesy of CNN
I've been simply shaken by what I read on newspapers several days ago and
want to explain why but bit by bit -if this can be possible, without any haste.
I have to gather first all the data that would help to display how I perceive
the situation.
Please feel free to comment with no dubt or hesitation.
All approach and opinion is earnestly welcome.

Let-me add something here about photography;
When we were talking about weapons and their symbolic meaning to people,
I remembered a friend who once confessed me that his pistol has nearlly become
an organ of his body after longs years he spent in the army.
But then, he survived a couple of undesired incidents and at last, he decided to leave his pistol at home in spite of all the void he feels inside and that unbearable sense of being totally defenseless against the world.
Do you know what he did? He bought the most complicated camera he found and turned to photography. Now, he had an equally powerful tool at hand (symbolically) that he can take wherever he wants and play as he likes for long hours.
Only, sometimes taking the best picture was nearly an obsession (far above a hobby or some extra sense of meaning in daily life)

"To feel envy is human, to savor schadenfreude is devilish."
Arthur Shopenhauer
How to explain the presence of a special section devoted to crime on"Compassion is an unstable emotion. It needs to be translated into action, or it withers. The question is what to do with the feelings that have been aroused, the knowledge that has been communicated. If one feels that there is nothing "we" can do—but who is that "we"?—and nothing "they" can do either—and who are "they"?—then one starts to get bored, cynical, apathetic."

popular websites like Huffingtonpost.com? Can-we relate this
[to a certain extent] to pleasure derived from misfortune of others or to
modern man's thirst for violence ?

Nermin,
I'm reminded of the word unique to German - schadenfreude - and how that concept has become viral (it seems to me). Too much attention paid to the misfortune of others leaves little room for compassion. Although, sometimes, what we see as misfortune might be the best thing that ever happened to that person. But definitely not in the case of a murder.

Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are a part of the mystery that we are trying to solve.

I looked for English equivalents; some suggest epicaricacy for instance but
I thought that leaving it as it is in German is a better idea

Nowadays, I'm thinking a lot about compassion and Campbell's idea
of 'joyful participation to the sorrows of the world and asking;
Is-this possible for ordinary people/most of us?
Can-we generate true compassion in people? How?
& all opinion from all of you will be highly appreciated

Hello Nermin and ALOberhousler,
I think the Max Plank quote that ALOberhousler put forth solves your problem.
"Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is because in the last analysis, we ourselves are a part of the mystery that we are trying to solve."
-Max Plank
Then again Nietzsche put forth the idea of the Will to Power. Murder could be seen as the most uncivilised way to attain the will to power.
Joseph Campbell talked about slaying the self. We do not like to see ourselves sometimes. Therefore, we slay others with words and deeds. We must first conquer ourselves.
Just some thoughts,
Cadfael
