James,

I agree. His song is about love in a greater context, which is a more mature view.

Here is one of his songs from the first half of the 60s. The music at that time was focused on teen angst. It was a wonderful time to be a teen as far as music was concerned. Like you mentioned, it shows a subjective view.

This song has been copied a number of times, but I am partial to his version.

James,

I looked at the links on Latin Music you posted. I lived a third of my life in the Los Angeles/Santa Barbara area of California, and lived in New Mexico in the 90s. I have a real fondness for traditional Mexican music. In New Mexico I would listen to Radio Lobo in my car.

Here is an example that blends two great talents, Linda Ronstadt, who's father was Mexican-American, and Mariachi Vargas.

Ron; just for you. Many folks feel this was one of the best rock and roll concert videos ever made. For those who have not already seen any of the footage from this event; " A Black and White Night "; try to pick out how many of the cast you recognize. 8)

When Linda Ronstadt was moving into this phase of her career one her first efforts was with a Latin project. This was a brave and gutsy move on her part for her main audience was Anglo and she was taking a big risk. Not many artists with her level of " star power " would have done so. So to compliment your lovely Mexican example here is Linda doing a Latin number I thought you might find interesting. ( Incidentally one of the last artists I worked with for awhile was a Latin guitarist and we opened a show for Mariachi Vargas. At the end of the performance an encore was requested but the show was running behind schedule so we left the stage; but afterwards were invited back to their dressing room for a shot of Tequila. A nice gesture I thought and something you don't encounter very often. )

James,
I have a copy of "A black and white night." It was a great concert. Of course Roy Orbison was also in the Traveling Wilburys.

I remember an interview he had where he was asked about his popularity. He answered that they made music they loved and they were just lucky that it was popular.

How different it is today, where success is measured by YouTube hits.

Listening to Roy Orbison has sent me on a trip down memory lane. Here are some songs from that brief moment between early rock and roll and the British invasion.

For extra money, I worked in a record shop after school during this period.

Hey Ron; please forgive the late response. My computer hard drive " fried " so I have been consumed lately with the recovery effort. Fortunately I had backed up my music, pictures, and documents; but everything such as the operating system, software, etc.; will have to be redone. I'm limping along with a temporary fix at the moment; but this will be a big concern until it's taken care of.

Many of your great post selections reminded me of Joe's comments about the " Troubadour " tradition's focus concerning ( love ) which I think was a major element or theme in a lot of the music we knew and naturally in today's as well. Then I happened across this fascinating bit of text which seemed to cover the subject quite nicely.

Love of course is like a many faceted diamond with lots of varying dimensions. But here are several selections from our time which would relate; at least in the spirit of the thread; and offer three different expressions of them. And although they would likely be classified as pop-ballads they would more probably fall under the categories of: folk, sentimental, and jazz-blues.

I'll be in and out for awhile.

James,

I have always been partial to good voices. Those were excellent selections.

I hadn't heard that version of Scarborough Fair. The lyrics are more complex than I remember.

The first time I seriously listened to the song I had been drafted and was entering basic training. It was, as Campbell put it, the beginning of my rite of passage.

This song marks, for me, the break between childhood and manhood.

( BTW I saw you went to the " JCF Retreat "; I know it must have been great. I hope all went well and you had a grand time. ) :)

Ron I think that time was a cultural " Rite of Passage " for so many people as well. This nation went through a great deal of change during those years; and we crossed thresholds and boundaries on so many different kinds of levels one would hardly know where to begin and much of the music reflected that. Here are a couple of brief remembrances of the turmoil our generation and the country experienced.

BTW I thought the memory you shared of the early " Rock & Roll " years was very cool. To have a job like that back then must have been musical heaven. 8)

James I thought of you as soon as that popped up on my FB feed. Went to the Amazon page and watched the vid and omg what a cast of characters! Looking forward to owning it myself!

The workshop was quite cool. Will write about it here somewhere. Made some great connections, not the least of which was Bob Walter, who I'd finally gotten a chance to sit and chat with after knowing him virtually for 12 years. lol!

Indeed Ron; 11 year old Alisa Sadikova is extraordinary. Not only given the fact of her age but the depth of her playing. Here is what I could find on her background.

The main concern to me is the tremendous emotional pressure she will be under from here on out. It will be very difficult I think for her to experience a little girl's right to a normal childhood. But there is certainly no denying her talent.

She's 11. She looks younger to me, but that is probably because I am old.

Here is another song with a harp from a Welsh band called Catatonia.

Here is another which is more typical for them.

I thought it would be fun to play original versions of songs and then interesting covers.
Here is an example.

Both were big hits.
