This is strictly a technical link for understanding the effects and use of " Light and Shadow ". And for those like myself who struggle to learn some of these complex techniques; the tools are not always available or at hand while addressing the learning curve of photography. ( They may touch on the subject but they do not always deliver the proper information you need. For getting beyond just a basic ( point and shoot ) approach this particular video was much more than just instructive. And for me what it does is much like Joseph Campbell's work; and that is to learn how to look at a subject from a different perspective and to frame my understanding from another " point-of-view ". Yes; this is a very technical video about lighting and may seem a bit of a reach concerning a forum thread; but it's message; metaphorically speaking; is not just about learning how to look ( but how to actually " see " in another way ); if that makes better sense.

Al; I thought you might enjoy this even though you are further along with this craft than I am and may already be using some of these concepts. I am enjoying this early part of the process even though I am just beginning to get a basic foundation and have many miles yet to travel within my own photographic journey. )

Cheers :)

I came across this " Flicker " post which captures I think one of the great insights of human interconnection of the relationship between the subject on one end of the camera and the shooter at the other. And this essence of " You and the Other are one " is transferred through the lens to the photograph so that the viewer also can have this same experience of common humanity. 8)

Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are a part of the mystery that we are trying to solve.

Here is a tremendous photography website full of documentaries and other subjects of interest to photographers. The below segment on the passing of humanist photographer Mary Ellen Mark is an excellent example.

This is an exquisitely edited video of music with the photography of Charles Marville before the disappearance of old Paris. 8)
