The Baobab trees of Madagascar are an endangered species of trees
that are up to 800 years old.

They are the only trees still standing from what used to be a dense forest.

Cassowaries are flightless birds from the tropics of New Guinea and Australia.

From a distance, they appear to have tall feathers on their heads.
Actually, the top is part of their skull.

Greenland is the home of Inuit natives and northern Europeans. Once settled by Norsemen, it is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, (with home rule). The world's biggest island at 836,330 square miles, it has a population of fewer than 60,000 souls who are mostly Evangelical Lutheran, but retain shamanistic cultural ties. One shaman, asked about Inuit beliefs, said, "We don't believe. We fear."

Their stories include those of a vengeful and fingerless sea goddess who controlled the success of the seal and whale hunts.

There is a saying in photography about stepping back to get perspective. Here is a photograph taken from the NASA " Curiousity " rover on Mars of earth that gives you a sense of just how small we are.

I often wonder about how Joseph Campbell would like to have seen photos like these. Here are some particularly striking of NASA's offerings. Just staggering in their comprehension when you stop to consider what they represent. Yet utterly mesmerizing in their overwhelming beauty. 8)
