Campbell's William Blake Quote :: "...your message to M

Post by dalber »

Hello,
Thanks up front for being such a great resource!

I'm looking for the quote -- I think it was in The Power of Myth -- of Campbell quoting William Blake, regarding the Annunciation, something like, "What good your message to Mary, if you deny that same message to me."

Thanks!
Very much appreciated!
Dave

Hi, Dave, and welcome!

So far I can offer this much at least--Campbell's quoting of Blake along this line is not in the print edition of The Power of Myth. As for the DVD version, I don't own it, so should it differ from the text in any way, hopefully someone will come along and clue us--me--in.

And hopefully someone will come along, too, and let us know if it's in some other Campbell source.

Have you by any chance researched Blake's own works?

:)

Hi Dave and Cindy,

It appears to be from Angelus Sileslius. In Pathways to Bliss (pg. 23) Campbell says:
...There is a wonderful line from the German mystic Angelus Silesius: "Of what use, Gabriel, your message to Marie / Unless you can now bring the same message to me?"...
