Welcome rmccain!
Yes, I noticed this a couple of decade ago with my grandmother. She couldn't handle all the bad news featured on TV and literally thought the world was about to implode. However, when we look at what different groups went through at different times of their history... well we've been through a lot as a species.
Now the internet has definitely created the perfect mythological portal, through it we can find humanities best and worst and all shades of gray in between.

I think we created the Internet as a technological metaphor for the INNERNET.
In a materialistic oriented world that´s the best way to induce mainstream globalisation, grassroot journalism, science, media an akasha to touch, etc.

Simply another manifestation of man´s desire to connect to the transcedent...with the whole wide world...the web...the matrix.
Afterall not everyone has the discipline or the desire to do yoga, meditation or explore the shamanic experience through botanical drugs.
The WWW is just a way for the geek to inherit the earth.

Came across some interesting premise. That the rise or instigation of the internet changed the meaning of computer from being a arithmatic device to being a "communication" device. Now that a quantum leap of sorts. To go from meaning numbers to meaning meaning. Yet what is it we have advanced communicating then. From logic to what?
