From Monty Python's "Life of Brian":

Crowd to Brian's mother: "Are you a virgin?"

Brian's mother: "None of your business!"

Crowd murmurs to one another: "Yeah, she's a virgin."

The Bible clearly states that you are supposed to read it for yourself, and not listen to the teachings of men on it.

Even more so, the Bible is pretty clear (at least for those individuals who actually do read it with an open enough mind, it seems) about the "reading it for yourself" only being half the picture.

From the Gospel according to NoMan:
Thus Jesus answered saying, “Thou should not rely on the interpretations of Scripture by the [...Religious leaders] be they Jews or Gentiles, but arriveth at ye own conclusions.

- NoMan 3:16
You can tell I’d never make it in a seminary. I don’t know of any passages that say who should interpret Scripture or how it should be interpreted. Interestingly, this problem of interpretation and authority has been the cause of innumerable war and bloodshed throughout history – until the twentieth century – when we found other things to fight about.

Widespread literacy is a relatively new phenomenon. A god who relies on the written word to get his message across to a 99 percent illiterate world is pretty damned inefficient.

It looks like Bill Maher takes a stab at the Virgin Birth Motif in his new film "Religulous". He points out that the Virgin Birth motif of a dieing and rising God man had been well established throughout the mediterranean long before the Christian era. The Isis-Horus nativity scene on the temple walls of Luxor being a prime example.
"Scholars conjecture that a sense of divinity in Nature co-evolved with the first emergence of human consciousness, perhaps 100,000 years ago. The earliest god was Nature."

As far back as we are able to look into the past, says historian Colin Wilson, "human beings seem to have worshipped nature, and connected it to a higher spiritual reality, which they called god or the divine."
