What's a fire and why does it burn?

Post by skysoblue »

Hi there,

After watching Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth with Bill Moyers, I found a one quote at the end by Joseph Campbell that fascinated and seemed so profound it kept me wondering.

In the segment, Joseph commented scientists could not explain the meaning of fire. He went on stating a scientist could tell him it is a process of oxidation, but could not explain the what it means.

Can someone expand on this idea?

I have included a Youtube link to a Disney song by the Little Mermaid. Ariel also asks the question "What's a fire and why does it burn?". Her lamentation is where I needed to go further.

What do you all think?
